Get out your pillows and blankets and be ready to dig in for the long haul: Edmonton’s favourite improv troupe, Die-Nasty, is once again holding its annual Soap-a-Thon, and this year is promising to be bigger than ever.
“This year I’d like to make it different,” says director Dana Anderson. “You can bet that more people will be going for [all 53 hours].”

As Anderson explains, the idea this year is to bring in as much talent as possible for the nearly three-day event, running continuously from Friday evening to Sunday night. Besides Die-Nasty’s regulars, audiences can expect to see actors from local groups like Rapid Fire Theatre and Blacklisted, as well as performers from Toronto, Britain and Australia showing up for cameos.

“Anything can happen and anything usually does,” points out longtime member Davina Stewart. “We have many excellent actors coming to play with us; [being on-stage with Die-Nasty] is the best place to workshop.”
That might be true, but how many workshops involve (amongst other things) rampaging sex, cheating, drug abuse and murder? This year, all the craziness takes place in Cadaver, Alberta, a town that’s just been invaded by a Los Angeles film crew making a zombie movie on a tight budget.

Beyond that, there’s really no way of knowing what to expect: last year’s event featured a wedding in West Edmonton Mall, and a reception where actors opened presents from the audience. While there are a few traditions that happen every year—including the Hours of Gratuitous Nudity (Sat from 4 am - 6 am) and the Family Hours (Sun 2 pm - 4pm)—no one can predict exactly how those will go, either.

If all goes according to plan, though—Anderson says he hopes to get as many people as possible improvising for as long as possible—Sunday’s finale should be one for the books: things can get a little giddy near the end of this impressive comedic feat even when most cast members aren’t sticking it out for the whole thing.

“We’ve had some hilarious moments,” explains Stewart. “Some great characters have been born.”
And with the promise of an impressive number of performers on stage this year, one can rest assured that 2007 will be much more, of more of the same ... so to speak. V
