Bestest local sports team to buck our reputation as metaphors for species extinction and the climate
Edmonton isn’t renowned for having sports teams with the most environmentally friendly names. Oilers. Drillers. Oil Kings. Cracker-Cats (trivia time: “cat cracking” refers to the process of Fluid Catalytic Cracking involved in refining crude oil into gasoline). But then along comes a pro basketball team with a polar bear—the poster animal for the impacts of climate change—for a mascot and a team name that offers good advice when it comes to the climate: Chill. You kind of have to cheer for the underdog in that group.
