Bestest place to take a kid when you want to read a magazine

{embed="/"}

As far as inanimate objects go, the Edmonton Public Library is some babysitter. There isn’t a single branch that isn’t a paradise for small illiterates. Trains, boats, stuffed tortoises, running room, screaming room, puzzles, toys—not to mention a virtually unquantifiably large stock of DVDs and picture books. In a city that is hardly brimming with veritable public spaces, the public library is a beacon for the child-harried and anti-consumeristic. And, though the librarians probably won’t thank you if junior throws a fit while your back is turned, this is one of the few places in town where you don’t have to worry about leaving your offspring alone for five minutes while you plough through the latest celebrity rag or knitting magazine or New York Times. Plus, your kid gets a free library card (to back yours up when you’ve somehow managed to accumulate $87 in late charges) and a free book with membership if she is under the age of two.
