Tackling the disturbing subject matter of eugenics is no small feat, and Aleugenta doesn’t hesitate to examine it from every unsettling angle. Focusing on the Sexual Sterilization Act, a policy once enacted in our own province, the actors move fluidly between characters and settings, exploring everything from the chilling conversations of eugenics supporters to the traumatic realities of people who were forcibly sterilized. The cast manages the play’s rapid scene changes and furious dialogue flawlessly, with an especially fearless and energetic performance from Spenser Payne. Dramatic without seeming artificial, Aleugenta is equal parts fascinating, horrifying and deeply affecting.
