City with a plan
Edmonton's municipal development plan, The Way We Grow, will be heard by city council on May 26. Approved by city council on March 10, the plan was reviewed by the province's Capital Region Board and returns to council for third reading and final approval. The municipal development plan provides a strategic direction for the urban growth while the previous plan, known as Plan Edmonton focused on municipal responsibilities, this plan forcuses on land use management, and urban growth for a city that will become home to over 1 million people by 2040.
The new plan focuses on the development of what it describes as a “compact urban form” focusing on downtown development, high-density living and greater public transit. Plans to revitalize downtown as well as renew transportation development in the city have been developed along a parallel timeline. The Way We Grow, if approved at the May 26 council meeting will influence urban development decisions for the next ten years as Bylaw 15100.
