If you can get past the band's initial over-hypedness—and there are
those who still struggle with it—the Arctic Monkeys is one of the more
clever acts who can count on mainstream support. Though Humbug pushes the
band away from its more upbeat, punky roots—not a whole lot here would
play all that well on a dance floor—Alex Turner's sharply sarcastic
lyrics haven't gone anywhere, and though the album has its share of sonic
missteps, for the most part the evolution seems natural: the groovy low-ends
of "Crying Lightning" and "Potion Approaching" seem appropriate for Turner's
weltschmerz, and the relatively dreamy "Cornerstone" might be the best song
the group has ever written.Arctic Monkeys
