Desire's Despair, the debut for Manitoba-based duo Stefanie Blondal Johnson and Jodi Dunlop is an in-your-face disc, blending catchy hooks with reverb-laden melodies that mix together a little '60s girl pop, a dash of early punk, some garage rock and even a little folk whipped into a frenzy. Blondal's voice is strong, with a raw edge full of emotion that's joined by Dunlop for captivating harmonies complimenting the overall melody of each song. The duo is at its best when its going full steam ahead and playing to the rock end of its broad musical spectrum, with tracks such as "Perfect Killers (Oh Child)" being stand outs. While it's a strong start for a new group, there's still room for improvement. The songs, while catchy, tend to lean on overly-repetitive choruses that put a damper on the often intriguing stories beginning to unfold.
