Sea Pinks is a band—well, not really, it's a solo project by one Neil Brogan who plays all the instruments on record then drafts local musicians to back him at live shows—that is the sonic equivalent of a day at the beach that ends in a thunderstorm and a harried run back to the car. The songs come laid back, lo-fi, surfy without being kitschy, with a dark undertone of melancholy and betrayal through the faraway reverb. It's a fair metaphor for Belfast, the city Sea Pinks hails from. A city by the sea with no beaches, where it's overcast 300 days of the year, Sea Pinks manages to be a glimpse of the quirky beauty that shines through all of the rainy days and Irish fatalism.
