Hip Hop on the Ave started in 2008 as a wicked idea for Komrade's 20th birthday. The birthday boy, née Stephen Goyette, was known for two things: being a rapper (one half of Brothers Grim, his little brother Pat Grim being the other) and being a big bolster of 118 Avenue, his home turf. So he booked the neighbourhood's premier music venue, Avenue Theatre, and called up his favourite local emcees to celebrate the big two-oh.

"After seeing the success of the show and hearing from the younger crowd about how they wanted a chance to perform, I decided to switch the direction of the show," says Goyette. "I took into account how much I enjoyed the few all-ages rap shows when I was a minor [and] how hard it was to set up my first show ... I made the second show all ages, and to prevent the usual obstacles of an admission fee, the show was free with a donation for Edmonton's Food Bank."

This year, Goyette has teamed up with 630 CHED Santas Anonymous. "They faced a shortage this year with toys and trends show that will continue in the years to come. All kids deserve a Christmas and Santas Anonymous is a great charity that ensures year after year this happens for thousands of kids," he says.

This year has also seen a surge in corporate support for the show, including a gold sponsorship from the Blue Pear fine-dining restaurant. That's ballin'.

As for the focus on up-and-comers, that hasn't changed. The first half of the show will allow seven new acts to make a fresh impression on many. "In a competitive, driven music like hip hop, it's rare when someone is willing to give you the time of day. I want to be able to give young kids coming up their first shot at rocking a show and having their friends, family and fans present."
