Amelia Curran
War Brides
(Six Shooter)

Amelia Curran is “just a Tuesday in a world of Friday nights.” Or so she says. She’s also a talented songwriter, singer and guitarist. War Brides is like a slow, relaxing drive alone through the countryside, with just your wandering thoughts to keep you company. If I were to imagine the initial stages of Curran’s songwriting process, I’d guess that she allows her memories to wash over her in an uninhibited stream-of-consciousness, one image inviting another to follow it. Such is the mood of her songs—unhurried, reflective, personal and more wistful than sad. I also suspect that she crafted each song with a sincere and very, very, specific purpose. I hear a bit of rock, some folk and lots of roots. And then she throws in some tango in “All The Ladies.” While her gravelly voice adds incredible texture, she also allows the background instruments to have their own voice. This album isn’t meant to be blasted loudly. Turn the volume down a little bit. And then just listen. Really, really listen. V
