The world has certainly changed in the last 10 years. The American
Idol-launched stream of releases from contestents has grown into a
river—so many, in fact, that it hardly seems to matter anymore if
someone started there so much as what they do afterwards. Such is the case
with Katharine McPhee's latest: it's a pop album, and at times it cuts deeper
than the club anthems that are her biggest competition. Not that McPhee's
album is at all groundbreaking, but as far as dressed-down pop tunes go, one
could do worse than this set with its emphasis on melody and uncomplicated
arrangments. There are stumbles—"Terrified" is a fairly rote and
saccharine one of those—but McPhee pulls off some gentle, inviting pop
often enough to get through the record. Just not without a few bumps.Katherine McPhee
