There's a legend that says slide-boogie guitar player Hound Dog Taylor cut
off an extra finger that he was born with, after a drunken night spent with
it getting in his way. Rich Hope didn't cut off any fingers to make this
record, but this Vancouver-based duo manages to pull off that boogie, along
with a multitude of other styles found on this disc. Gospel, delta blues, a
Gordie-Johnson assisted tune (one of the strongest tracks) and no God damn
bass make a compelling argument for the group's version of what rock 'n' roll
should be: fun and genuinely house-rockin'. The music barely covers what
these cats can do live, although all of it feels off-the-floor and definitely
raw. I could do without mentions of the Mississippi, juju and "bidness,"
though—guys, you're white and probably barely from East Van. Just be
yourselves, and keep that finger you found close by. You never know when you
might need it.Rich Hope
