As a dark, crawling synth descends into the darkness on opener "There is XXXX (Within My Heart)"—and Becky Ninkovic sings in an exhausted voice, "When the morning comes / And I don't want to face the daylight"—it seems apparent that You Say Party! We Say Die!'s latest is going to be a downer. But as the record spins on the band weaves its way through the shadows of the night, glimmers of hope slipping through. By the time the album closes with the rolling glory of "Heart of Gold" it's clear that YSP! WSD! was doing more than running ragged through the dangerous streets—the band was charting a course for the daylight, locking in on those sunbeams and holding its collective head high while clawing its way towards safety. XXXX is a joyous album, even if it takes some work to wade through the murk that it works so hard to rise above.
