If a metal band from the birthplace of grunge, formed at the height of the grunge-era, seems incongruous then you've probably heard Nevermore. The Obsidian Conspiracy continues Nevermore's dedication to heavily striking elements of metal from progressive to thrash. The opening reassures you the band has the instrumental command to create the weighty tones and you begin to hope you're in for a metal adventure, but the album quickly becomes repetitious and a bit grating. Despite vocalist and ex-Sanctuary member Warrel Dane's charismatic and obviously talented voice, the instrumentation and the vocals never quite align and the album begins to feel conflicted. The lyrics don't help the situation, often feeling contrived and out of place. That being said, Dane does demonstrate great vocal range and an obvious talent at melodious vocals.
