The Dead Cold: Accidentally on purpose
Supposed to just be for kicks, the Dead Cold is getting hot
Sometimes the best things just happen—no planning required. In fact, sometimes planning can get in the way of doing something actually cool. A lack of a plan is the modus operandi of local brutal/grind band the Dead Cold, a band that will be releasing its four-song demo this Friday at Brixx. As drummer Bryan "Machine" Newbury explains, the Dead Cold wasn't ever going to record and release anything, or even really play a show, but one thing always leads to another."Originally the band itself was never gonna be anything serious. We had never really planned on it—we were just jamming for fun, and it's still for fun," he says, before explaining that the demo idea came from guitarist Andrew "Muscles" Henwood. "It's a four-song effort, pretty brutal stuff. It's really raw and entirely live off the floor. There's no triggers or samples, no metronome was used, it's basically just us jamming with a little vocals and solo overdubs."
Though Newbury has been in a number of bands over the years, and indeed has a few projects on the go right now, he explains that the chemistry he found between he and Henwood has been a pleasant surprise, one that fans of the band will be able to hear for themselves on the release.
"We started jamming kinda randomly and I never thought it would become what it is, but we have this uncanny chemistry for writing tunes, coming up with heavy, brutal, fun stuff, and it just kind of flowed from us," says Newbury. "The guy's a riff machine—I've had chemistry with other players in the past but I've found it really hard to find someone with which you just gel and music just flows from you. He's got this winning energy to him, he's on all the time—I swear he eats a pound of sugar every morning." V
