The Perms
Shane Smith, bassist and vocalist for the Perms, says that prior to recording of the group's fourth album, things weren't exactly running smoothly, though the band found some solace in music. Smith explains the passing of his father-in-law and his own father being diagnosed with Parkinson's were just a few of the things that led to the Perms turning to song."When you're emotionally involved in your own life, it can provide a lot of chances to write music," Smith explains. "It wasn't good that we had to go through that, but it was definitely good that we were able to talk about our emotions and feelings through music."
Smith says that although the band normally works as a three-headed team, for this album the decision was made to bring in a producer. He explains that a fourth head made the creative process more interesting and alleviated some of the weight the band would normally shoulder on its own.
"Recording can be a pretty stressful thing sometimes, especially when you're sinking all of this money into a project. This time around it was really relaxed and there was no stress involved. We just went in there and worked. It was fun and that's a good thing."
