Opening the tape with harsh noise is "Grey Dark," a throbbing, squealing track that serves as a jarring bookend to Knots' latest experimental folk EP, White River of White Lies. Although it's obvious that Knots worships at the temple of Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie, The Microphones), the comparisons are irrelevant, since Calgary-based principle artist Neal Moignard has such a unique and subtle control of his lyrics. Knots might sound fragile at first listen, but these songs are quite the opposite: They are pillars, small but strong statements on the fabric of our lives, especially focusing on honesty and the lies that dance with them. An album highlight is the song "Use It," coaxing the listener to grab hold of the opportunities that exist in the daily existence, shedding light on the beauty of our abilities over the traditional physical traits. This is a dark EP, perfect for the looming fall, sending us off with the warm white-noise of the song "Grey Light," a gentle bookend.
