Diary of a Gig Fiend: Halloween
While the spirit of punk rock has always been alive and well in our fair city, it was positively resurrected, kicking and screaming, last week for Halloween. With the Velvet Underground decked out as CBGB's, the epicenter for New York's punk explosion in the '70s, a few hundred lucky and sweaty fans were treated to the long dead sounds of Operation Ivy, the Addicts and of course the Ramones. Or at least a reasonable facsimile that is, put on by local bands masquerading as their favourite punks. As if that wasn't enough, upstairs at the Whisky-a-Go-Go (the Starlite) an all-star cast of musicians were finishing off the night as AC/DC. I want every night to be Halloween—there are still plenty more bands from the rock 'n' roll underworld I'd like to see. V
